Visa vs PayPal: the power of fintech
Fintech is a hot topic in 2020. Investors clearly agree with the share prices of Visa, PayPal and Mastercard at all time highs. Have quarterly financial results delivered the goods?
Visa (US: V.) and PayPal’s (US: PAYL) final quarter financial results make an interesting comparison. Both companies help people make payments and should theoretically both be boosted or battered by the same trends. But while PayPal soared to another record in the three months to December 2019, Visa’s numbers have been described as “soft around the edges”. The former has benefited from the rise in e-commerce, while the latter suffered as political uncertainty dented overall spending in some key markets. This contrast is another sign that the market is heading towards a card-less future.
