The week at a glance: 15 July – stocks are more reliable than currency
Corporate earnings season has kicked off in the US and, to a lesser extent in the UK. That’s given us plenty of options for winner and loser of the week.
We can’t always trust the outlook statements of companies we invest in, or the accounts of why things go wrong. Some of the financial results released in this first busy week of corporate earnings season show that all too clearly. AG Barr (LON: BAG) for example, which has blamed the chilly Scottish spring for poor demand for Irn Bru in the first half of 2019. As if cold weather in Scotland is anything new. Management should perhaps look instead at the extraordinary ingredients in its flagship beverage, which don’t look all that appealing to an increasingly health conscious society. Asos…
