Electric vehicle owners in the not-too-isolated Essex town of Loughton can charge their cars at the GeniePoint in Morrisons. Or they can travel three miles to the ten VendElectric charging stations at Top Golf in Epping. That isn’t a massive range of options in a town with a population of more than 30,000. When new petrol and diesel cars are banned in the UK from 2035, there are going to be some mighty queues at the charging stations.
The UK’s electric vehicle infrastructure needs major investment if the country is going to hit its target of emitting virtually zero carbon by 2050. Charging times – currently about 90 minutes using a rapid charger – will also need to come down, while the range of a full battery – 100 miles for today’s average EV – must improve.
